Writing Place, Pushing Genre: Adventures across South Africa and Australia

This series of research focused events was funded by a MCCA Strategic Research Grant, Humanities Research & Graduate Studies, Thesis Eleven and CUSP. The opening public lecture, Writing South African Cities was presented by Noëleen Murray from Wits City Institute, South Africa, with Peter Newman from CUSP as discussant. This was followed by two full day workshops. The first was an informal opening conversation presented by Noëleen Murray and Ivan Vladislavić from the University of Witwatersrand, with responses from Peter Beilharz, Trevor Hogan, Sian Supski, and comments from Sisonke Msimang, John Mateer and Meg Samuelson. The second workshop was a mix of conversations and short papers by Peter Beilharz, Sian Supski, Ivan Vladislavic, Sean Gorman, Kim Scott, Naama Grey-Smith, Matt Roberts, Meg Samuelson, Renee Schipp, Peter Newman and Dora Marinova. A final public talk was held at Pakenham Street Art Space in Fremantle on Friday 30 June 2017, with an audience of more than 50 particpants. This event was held in collaboration with Another Antipodes, a WA based arts organisation which strives to strengthen communication and understanding between Australia and Africa.
